IT WAS TWO years ago that I first became involved with a project to build a 60-unit, 40,000-square foot apartment complex to provide housing for homeless veterans. I am now proud to say that on Monday, February 9, the ceremonial ribbon cutting took place to commemorate the start of construction.
Many dignitaries were present at the event. I had the honor of joining Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA 18th Congressional District) and the Lisa Freeman, Director of the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, in giving brief congratulatory remarks to the gathering of around 50 guests.
Located at 795 Willow Road, the project is funded by a variety of public donors, including the City of Menlo Park and San Mateo County.
There are some 900 homeless veterans in Santa Clara and San Mateo County. "This housing project is a huge step toward ending homelessness among veterans - it will provide a roof over the heads of those who have served this country so well."
Construction will be completed in December 2015.
"San Mateo County played a big part in providing funding for this project, and as a veteran, I am proud to have played some small part in getting this project off the ground in a truly remarkably short period of time."
"A big thank you to my colleagues on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors who approved the $1.2 million in funding for the project."
